A-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE

During this A-Level English Language and Literature course you will explore voices in speech, varieties in language and literature while studying classics authors like Arthur Miller, Emily Bronte and Oscar Wilde.

Upon successful completion of the exam and practical assessments (as administered by Pearson Edexcel) you will have achieved an internationally recognised Pearson Edexcel A-Level English Language and Literature.

You must sit two examinations and submit a piece of coursework

Paper 1: Voices in speech and writing

This paper consists of two section. It’s open book so you can take a clean copy of the prescribed text into the exam

Section A: Voices in the 20 th -21 st  Century Text

One essay question on an unseen extract selected from 20 th  and 21 st  century sources one text from the anthology

Section B: Drama Texts

One extract based essay on the chosen drama text;

Exam length: 2 hours, 40% of A-Level, 8 questions (You answer 2) 50 marks, 25 for each section

Paper 2: Varieties in Language and Literature

This paper consists of two section. It’s open book so you can take a clean copy of the prescribed text into the exam

Section A: Unseen Prose Non-Fiction Texts

One essay question on an unseen extract of non-fiction prose from a choice of four. The unseen extract is linked to the study theme.

Section B: Drama Texts

One comparative essay question from a choice of four on one prise fiction anchor text and the other from a theme;

Exam length: 2 hours, 40% of A-Level, 8 questions (You answer 2) 50 marks, 25 for each section

Paper 3: Coursework Investigating and Creating Texts

The coursework component consists of two assignments

Assignment 1: Two pieces of original writing, one piece of fiction writing and one piece of creative non-fiction wiring

Assignment 2: One analytical commentary reflecting on your studies texts and the two original writing pieces you have produced
20% of the A-Level (60 Marks, 36 for Assignment 1 and 24 for Assignment 2)

The Pearson Edexcel A-Level English Language and Literature qualification is gained once both exam papers are successfully completed along with coursework. These exams are administered by the Pearson Edexcel and assessment centre details will be included with your course, as well as practice papers so that you are more than prepared for your assessments. You will need to contact your local examination centre to work through your coursework requirements.

In addition, there will be a number of tutor marked assessments (TMAs) to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the course materials, with the tutor sending comments to guide you through any areas of potential difficulty, as well as a range of self-assessments that are indicators that you understand the materials as you work through them. These are for your own information, and do not need to be shown to your course tutor.

Online

The course is primarily an online course using a Learning Management System (LMS).

The online course has many features that cannot be printed such as embedded videos, forums and interactive tests.

The course includes Tutor Marked Assessments which you access and submit through the online system.

Our A Level courses come with tutor feedback and support by email for 24 months. They will mark your TMAs and provide valuable guidance through any trickier parts of the course whenever you need it. You will also receive a study guide to help you with all aspects of studying, essay writing and general student skills.
