GCSE Sociology gives you fascinating insight into the study of people in society. You will look at the individual, group and societal levels and how they interact.

This course will prepare you for study at A-Level as well as giving you a better understanding of society around you.


Upon successful completion of the exam and practical assessments (as administered by CIE), you will have achieved an internationally recognised CIE GCSE Sociology (0495) qualification.Learn more.

  • Develop your knowledge and understanding of sociology.
  • Learn how sociologists unravel how social factors influence people.
  • Understand the complexity of family education, ethnicity, social class and gender.
  • Understanding the concept of group behaviour.
  • Appreciate how statistics can aid a social science.

This course is divided into 2 units:

Unit 1: Paper 1

Exam Availability:  June

Written examination: 2 hours 30 mins

  • Candidates answer one compulsory question on sociological research methods.
  • The candidate will answer three optional questions on culture socialisation, social stratification and inequality, power and authority (60 marks).
  • The compulsory question in Section A will be based on source material. The question will carry one third of the marks for the paper. Candidates should spend approximately 45 minutes answering this question. Section A will test Syllabus Unit 1.
  • Sections B to D will consist of structured questions based on stimulus material. The stimulus will take the form of a short quotation or statement from a sociological source. Sections B to D will test Syllabus Units 2 to 4. There will be two questions related to each of these units

  • Unit 1: Paper 2

    Exam Availability: January and June

    Written examination: 1 hours 45 mins

  • Candidates answer three optional questions on the family; education; crime, deviance and social control and the mass media. (40 marks).
  • The candidate will answer three optional questions on culture socialisation, social stratification and inequality, power and authority (60 marks).
  • The three questions will be structured around some stimulus material. The stimulus will take the form of a short quotation or statement from a sociological source. Candidates will answer three questions from Sections A to D.
  • Paper 2 will test Syllabus Units 5 to 8. There will be a choice of two questions related to each of these units.
  • The CIE GCSE Sociology qualification is gained once the two exam papers are successfully completed. These exams are administered by CIE and assessment centre details will be included with your course, as well as practice papers so that you are more than prepared for your assessments.

    In addition, there will be a number of tutor marked assessments (TMAs) to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the course materials, with the tutor sending comments to guide you through any areas of potential difficulty, as well as a range of self-assessments that are indicators that you understand the materials as you work through them. These are for your own information, and do not need to be shown to your course tutor.

    The course is primarily an online course using a Learning Management System (LMS).

    The online course has many features that cannot be printed such as embedded videos, forums and interactive tests.

    The course includes Tutor Marked Assessments which you access and submit through the online system.
